Overheard receives welcome echo[Film Business Asia Limited]

Production is underway on Overheard 2 (竊聽風雲2), a sequel to the cop thriller Overheard (竊聽風雲, pictured) that was a hit for Alan Mak (麥兆輝) and Felix Chong (莊文強).

The high-concept thriller made $15.24 million ($2 million) in Hong Kong and a further RMB86.6 million ($13.2 million) in China in July 2009.

The new film is again co-scripted and co-directed by regular collaborators Mak and Chong and produced by Derek Yee (爾冬陞) with all the locations in Hong Kong.

It retains Lau Ching-wan (劉青雲), Daniel Wu (吳彥祖) and Louis Koo (古天樂) as the three stars from the first instalment, albeit in somewhat different roles. Lau plays a stock market investor who is being spied on by Wu's character. As a cop, Koo is on their trail.

Production is again through Mak's Pop Movies (百姓電影有限公司) with finance coming from both Bona Entertainment (博納影視娛樂有限公司) and Sil Metropole Organization (銀都機構有限公司), creating a Hong Kong-China co-production. The budget has climbed to just short of $8 million.

International sales are handled by Hong Kong's Distribution Workshop (發行工作室), which says the completed film could be in cinemas as early as August.
